Silence is better than words

Keep silence, listen carefully, first listen then speak

Silence is better than words

There is always a moment in our lives when we find our silence more powerful than speech. The Latin proverb Speech is silver, silence is golden" highlighted the importance of silence over speech. In the olden days, India followed a sacred practice ‘Vow of silence’. As a part of this people were required to maintain silence for at least two days. This practice was followed to develop analytical skills, sharpen objectivity, and virtue of patience.

Many learned men and sages were known to follow it very religiously and thereby add to their treasure of knowledge. We often see people try to impress others with their oratory power and they can do such just because they know how to use words while speaking. They know very well know how to listen to others. In fact, you can say that they know the power of silence, and based on that ability they can easily connect with other people.

If we can analyze when to talk, how much to talk, and what to talk then it is a very valuable quality. We should also know when not to talk. Talking too much always reveals human behavior or its weaknesses. Silence not only hides our weakness but also gives us strength.

We need to be very careful while speaking because the use of unusual or ambiguous words may create an enemy where we had hoped to win a friend. As Goldsmith has rightly said, “An unlucky word dropped by the tongue cannot be brought back by a coach and six horses”. Let me give you an example of an unusual talk. If you can recall one incident of "The Mahabharata" where Draupadi called Duryodhana as 'Blind son of a blind man' and after that incident, the war of 'Mahabharat' happened. So sometimes unusual words can give you so big trouble in which you can lose your everything.

Hence the golden rule is, “Speak only when you have something to say and when you have said it, become silent”. A silent man is often reputed to be wise. Carlyle very appropriately remarks, “What a strange power there is in silence; how many resolutions are formed, how many sublime conquests effected, during that pause when lips are closed, and the soul secretly feels the eye of its maker upon itself. They are the strong ones on earth who know how to keep silent”.

In general word, we can say that it is better to remain silent than to talk about every matter or subject. Sometimes this can be the reason for generating arguments.

Importance of silence

Before I start telling you the importance of silence, let me give you a short example which proves that how much power is silence. So, this incident is taken from our epic book "The Ramayana". When ‘Lord Shri Rama’ breaks Shiv Dhanush during the swayamvara event in Mithila then Lord Parshuram comes there and called that person with a wave of huge anger to kill and do whatever they can at that moment. But another side where Lord Shri Ram can reply to him, but they choose to maintain silence. Because they knew very well the power of silence at that moment. That’s why we called 'Lord Shri Ram' as a complete man.

As know, we are living in this noisy world. When a little silence brings a lot of happiness and peace in our life and sometimes it also works to remove some unpleasant situations from our life then why we cannot adopt this in our routine life. When someone faces some huge problems in his life just because of his words then it is always better to take a nap of silence until the situation gets better.

We all know the power of the word "silence". Silence always indicates a happy and relaxed life. Silence is good for overall physical health and well-being apart from giving our ears a break. You can say in other words, it is always better to rest your tongue instead of ears.

Seen from a psychological point of view, silence has always proven its power to promote personal happiness and well-being. Silence directly helps in reducing blood pressure, anxiety and sometimes it can even be a reason to avoid a heart attack.

So, it is not possible to answer in words in every situation. "Silence may be a reason to indicate sympathy." When we are in the tune of enlisting others instead of speaking up, it always helps to understand what people want to say.

In the end, we can say that silence is more precious like gold than silver. So always try to listen first then speak.

Speech is silver, silence is golden
